How Is A Job Printed?

How a job is printed depends on many factors, such as the specifications of the print project and the technology used to do it. Each print shop has a process, and each one will have its unique aspects.

Basic steps in the modern printing process

1. Customer and printer agree on job specifications.

A print sales representative works with the customer to decide on the print job specifications such as price, paper, quantity, delivery, etc., based on the customer’s project needs.

2. Printer receives packaged job from customer.

Materials that make up the printed piece, such as fonts, computer files, photos, graphics, and text are packaged together and given to the sales representative.

Pre-Press Plate

3. Job checked and plates are produced.

The sales representative takes the customer's package back to the print shop and delivers the materials to the pre-press department. There, the materials are organized, checked for errors and configured for imaging to a plate for the printing press. Learn more about our pre-press department.

Today, the plates are created two ways: using film negatives that are then burned to the plate, or using computer-to-plate (CPT) technology, where computer files are imaged directly to plate. CTP technology is the best way to make press plates because they can maintain high resolutions.

4. Plates go to presses and job is printed.

The pre-press department delivers the plates to the press department where they will be used to print the job. The plate is added to the press machine and rotated at very high speeds. The plate rolls through ink and the image on the plate is printed onto the paper. Learn more about our press department.

Post-Press Sort

5. Cut and finished.

When the print run is complete, the printed pieces are sent to a bindery or post-press department where they will be cut and finished using special folding and sorting machines. Learn more about our post-press department.

6. Boxed and delivered.

The finished job is then boxed and delivered.
